  Chia Pets are clay animal figurines that grow "coats" by applying moistened chia seeds (Salvia hispanica) to the ridges of the Chia Pet's hollow body. They attained popularity in the 80s, following the release of the ram figurine in 1982. Chia PetŪ is the registered trademark belonging to Joseph Enterprises, Inc., the manufacturers and originators of the Chia Pet. The catch-phrase related to the Chia Pet, sung in the commercial as the plant grows, is "Ch-ch-ch-chia!"
